This lesson builds on students' prior knowledge of how we affect the environment and what materials we need from nature in order to survive. The lesson focuses on key concepts and questions that align with global citizenship. They will understand their own role in bettering the world through contribution by recycling and reusing materials. Students will be given multiple opportunities to discuss what they learn with their peers to further elaborate on their responsibility for helping the planet through these means. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to research the topic at home and share the following day with their classmates what they have learned.
What is global citizenship education and how does it inform my teacher leadership development? Global citizenship education is bringing awareness to students that our world is affected on a large scale. In addition, it builds on students' own responsibility in the world and how they can contribute to bettering it through just actions. Global citizenship is not just an understanding but it is how we are supposed to be living in order to better our world. The education portion of global citizenship presents students with ideas and opportunities to discuss various issues that are on a large scale. Students are presented with a large range of resources and exercises to understand their roles for being a global citizen. They learn to understand and respect their peers' views and perspectives. They gain a deeper understanding of how the world works and how the materials and resources they use must be sustainable because it affects more than just our population but the entire world. In addition, they grasp a deeper knowledge of injustices and how this affects not only our nation but globally as well.
Global citizenship education informs my teacher's leadership development by making me an active participant in achieving the goal of creating a more just and sustainable world. It gives me responsibility to support students in having an in-depth understanding of how to contribute on a global scale. It is my duty to support students in becoming aware of their roles as a world citizen. In addition, I must bring an equal understanding of injustice in order for students to gain an understanding of how they can support this. For example, the resources I utilize during my teaching can lead students into the right direction of becoming a global citizen. In addition, I can utilize culturally relevant resources. There are many ways to bring about change and it starts in the classroom as a leader of students.
